Interview with Ronald Caldwell [electronic resource] 2005 May 31 / interviewer: Lois Stickel [i.e. Stickell], Bridgette Sanders ; transcriber: Ruth F. Griffin.

Ronald Caldwell begins his interview with a description of UNC Charlotte when he was a freshman in 1967. Most of the few African Americans who were there were involved in the Black Student Union. He recalls Stokely Carmichael's visit to Charlotte and campus in 1968. He remembers an initial meeting with only African Americans in attendance. Bonnie Cone did not attend this meeting; the doors were locked. Caldwell, a co-leader of the Black Student Union with Ben Chavis, discusses the flag incident in detail. Some of his recollections, including whether or not the doors to the administration building were locked, conflict with some of the other interviews in this series. However, he does confirm the positive role played by Bonnie Cone, calling her "a significant diffusing element." The goal of UNC Charlotte's administration was integration, but they administrators made clear that no discrimination on either side would be tolerated. Caldwell uses admittance to African American Studies, and the wording of the Black Student Union constitution as examples. He admits that Bonnie Cone in particular helped many African American students get scholarships, be accepted into graduate schools, and establish of African American Studies program. He recalls Dean Colvard having a less hands-on approach to working with the African American students. He attributes this to Colvard's need to be more political. Caldwell reiterates several times during the interview that they always acted within the law.
